2007
Varsity Outlook
At Tuscarora High School, the annual
question regarding the Girl’s Soccer team is not will they be
successful, but has become how successful will they be. Following
back-to-back State Championships in the programs first two years of
varsity competition and a regional finals appearance in 2006, the Titans
enter the 2007 campaign with high expectations. With 14 returning
players, including 7 returning starters, and a handful of talented
newcomers, the Titans enter the 2007 campaign excited about what the
coming season may bring.
The 2007 Titans schedule will once
again prepare them for a strong playoff run with what may be the most
demanding public school schedule in the state. Highlighted by games
against annually nationally ranked sides Archbishop Spalding, McDonogh,
and John Carroll, the Titans schedule also includes another top IAAM
side in the Institute of Notre Dame. The Titans will open the season in
the THS Tournament of Champions with games against recent State
Champions Leonardtown and Eleanor Roosevelt. Overall, the Titans
schedule includes games against six schools who have won state titles in
recent years. The Titans MVAL Chesapeake Conference schedule will be
highlighted by the October 9th meeting with rival and state
power Urbana.
Leading
the way for Titans will be senior forward
Courtney Yee. After scoring 39
goals in her first three years, the senior two-time All-State striker
enters the year as the most dangerous goal scorer in the region.
Joining Yee up front will be senior captain
Natalie Salovich who
recorded 7 goals in 2006. The experienced pair will provide a constant
threat for the Titans and together have scored 4 goals in Maryland State
Finals games. Adding depth and danger to the front line will be
sophomore Karleigh Marceron. Marceron, a tremendous combination of
size, strength, and speed recorded 3 goals during her freshmen campaign.
In the midfield, the Titans are
led by a talented pair of central midfielders who combine outstanding
technical abilities with a strong physical, defensive presence. A
three-year starter, junior Danielle Roos returns to her central midfield
position after recording 5 goals and 8 assists as a sophomore. Joining
her will be freshmen Claire Kelly. A member of the Region I ODP team,
Kelly will be one of the most impactful newcomers in the state. Junior
Stephanie Andrews returns to her left
midfield role after recording 3
goals and 2 assists as a sophomore. Stepping into the right midfield
role will be
sophomore Michelle Rock. Providing some of the best
service in the area, Rock will be a constant threat in the final third
after recording 4 goals in her freshmen year. Providing depth and
experience in the midfield will be a pair of seniors in
Anna Morison and
Kayla Woodward. Morison provides outstanding speed on the flanks while
Woodward brings a strong defensive presence to the field.
The Titans defense will be led by
an imposing pair of central defenders who may leave as one of the
greatest pair of defenders in Frederick County history. Juniors
Melissa
Sweeney and Selena Mason combine strong technical abilities with a
physically imposing presence which also makes them outstanding targets
on restarts. Joining them in the back will be four-year varsity player
and captain, Megan Clementson. Sophomore
Brittany Clemons will fill the
final spot in the back four. Providing depth in the back will be pair
of juniors in Katie Noffsinger and
Rachel Wax.
In goal, 2006 starter
Sarah Jo
Hayden (soph), junior Sarah Maffei, and freshmen
Annie Wickett have all
had strong pre-seasons. The three are competing for the starting role
and will provide strong play in goal for both the present and future.
