At Tuscarora High
School, the annual question regarding the Girl’s Soccer team is not will
they be successful, but has become how successful will they be. With
three state championships in the program's first seven years of varsity
competition, including a state title and two region titles in the past
two years, the Titans look to once again compete for the treble,
expecting to be in the hunt for conference, region, and state titles.
With eight returning starters from the 2010 campaign, an impact
transfer, seventeen returning varsity players, and a handful of talented
newcomers, the Titans enter the season excited about the prospects
that the 2011 campaign will bring.
The 2011 Titans schedule will once again prepare them for a strong
playoff run The schedule is highlighted by the Titans annual Tournament
of Champions and a demanding MVAL Piedmont Conference schedule. In
the Tournament of Champions, the Titans will
face seven-time state champion River Hill and two-time state champion
Quince Orchard. The Titans most recent meetings with these two
sides include an overtime victory over River Hill in the state
semifinals on the way to the 2005 state championship and a victory over
Quince Orchard in the region finals on the way to the 2009 state
championship. As always, the MVAL Piedmont conference schedule may
provide the most competitive conference schedule in the state. The
conference schedule includes games against Middletown (2010 2A State
Champions), Oakdale (2010 1A State Champions), Thomas Johnson (2010 4A
State Semifinalist and 2-time State Champion), and Urbana (2007 3A State
Champion). The non-conference scheduled will be highlighted by the
Titans early season match at pre-season state title contender Century.
The Titans
potent attack will be led by a duo of dangerous strikers who have
combined for 55 goals over the past two years. 2-time All-State
junior forward Aaran Parry returns as a
focal point of the Titan attack. She has recorded 34 goals and 18
assists in her first two seasons and possesses a combination strength,
speed, and creativity which arguably make her the most dangerous front
runner in the state. Joining her up top is senior transfer
Jasmine Dao. A 3-year starter at
Frederick, Dao recorded 21 goals over the past two years and was an All-MVAL
selection for the Cadets. Her combination of tremendous speed and
a lethal left foot make her a threat anytime she enters the final third.
Expectations for the duo are high following a preseason in which the two
have quickly developed strong connection in their play. Junior
Tiffani Grubbs provides depth up front
and provides intelligent target play as a player who can help hold the
ball up for the side.
In the midfield
junior captain Emily Marshall will
lead the side. A third year starter, Marshall has recorded 3 goals
and 15 assists in her first two years and becomes the foundation of the
side following the graduation of All-State midfielder Claire Kelly.
Marshall, a member of the Region 1 ODP Team, brings tremendous vision
and creativity to the role and is expected to have a breakout season in
becoming one of the premier players in the area. Senior
Katie King returns to the midfield as a
starter for the third year and will once again bring an unparalleled
level of athleticism to the middle third of the field which allows her
to dominate the game with ball winning and energy. Her tremendous
pace makes her threat going forward and she will look to improve on the
4 goals and 5 assists that she recorded in 2010. Senior
Jillian Kosenski, Junior
Miranda Malagari, and sophomores
Hayley Hoagland and
Kenna Gubler are in competition for
the final two spots in the midfielder and all bring different
personalities that will benefit the side in different ways.
Hoagland is developing into a strong physical defensive presence in the
middle of the park and provides balance to the midfield. Kosesnki
has vaulted herself into a major role with a combination of strength and
speed which has an impact in the middle third of the field. Her
strong left sided service makes her dangerous in the final third.
Malagari has excelled both in the center of the park as well as out wide
with strong technical play and vision while Gublers dynamic athletic
ability enable her to be a strong two way player in the midfield.
Providing depth in the midfield will be sophomore
Caitlin Miller and freshmen
Ashley Toy who will split time between
the varsity and junior varsity sides.
The Titans
expect to once again lineup a dominant back four in 2011 as they will
field the most experienced group in program history with a trio of
seniors and one junior patrolling the back third. Seniors
Allison Shankle and
Kelsey Fletcher are three year
starters. Shankle, a second year captain, will lead the side from
her center back position and brings a physical, athletic presence to the
side. Fletcher returns to her right back position where she has
developed into an intelligent, disciplined defender who also provides
outstanding service into the attacking third. Senior
Kelly Jacobson and junior
Ashley Babco are second year starters
who bring a strong technical component to the back four. Sophomore
Brianna Miller has had a strong
preseason and will see time throughout the back four as she will be
groomed as the future leader of the Titans defense. Freshmen
Angelica Alicea will provide depth in
the back for the Titans. An outstanding athlete who possesses the
technique to be a danger out of the back, Alicea will train with varsity
while splitting time between the varsity and JV side as she gains
experience.
Senior
Elizabeth Ulan returns to the Titan net
following a junior season in which she recorded ten shutouts and only
allowed twelve goals in eighteen games. Continued growth has led
to expectations for even a stronger senior year. Freshmen
Meghan Laser, a Maryland ODP product,
has had a strong preseason, earning minutes in support of Ulan as she
prepares for a strong future in the Titan net. The depth in goal
will serve as a significant strength for the Titans in 2011.
